Where is my refund?

Choose your state below to open its official refund-status service, or use the federal button for the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool. Have your filing details nearby; returns requiring additional review, corrections or identity verification may take longer.

Federal refund

Official government links open in a new tab. Refund information is entered on the agency's website, not here.

What documents do I need to provide for tax preparation?

The documents needed depend on your sources of income and the events that occurred during the year. Common items include Forms W-2, 1099 and K-1, your prior-year return, estimated tax records, brokerage statements, property records, charitable contributions and business or rental records. Complete records help reduce delays.

Does filing an extension give me more time to pay?

No. An extension generally provides additional time to submit the return, but it does not postpone the deadline for paying the estimated tax due. Paying late may result in interest and penalties, even when the return itself is filed within the extension period.

What should I do if I receive an IRS notice or letter?

Do not ignore it. Read the entire notice, identify the tax year involved and note any response deadline. Keep the original notice, gather the related records and send us a complete copy of every page before contacting the IRS or submitting a response.

What happens if I cannot pay my full tax balance?

File the return on time even when you cannot pay the full amount, and pay as much as reasonably possible by the deadline. Interest and applicable penalties generally continue until the balance is paid. The IRS offers short-term and monthly payment arrangements for qualifying taxpayers.

Do I need to make quarterly estimated tax payments?

You may need estimated payments when sufficient tax is not being withheld from your income. This commonly applies to business owners, independent contractors, landlords and people with investment income. We can calculate recommended payments using your expected income, deductions, credits and withholding.
